ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some major challenges for food production and distribution, drawing on the experience of small-scale Cambodian and Vietnamese farmers and their engagements in agricultural markets. Although the drivers of food insecurity are complex and interconnected, many agricultural interventions tend to sidestep important structural factors and neglect environmental concerns. Achieving sustainable food systems therefore calls for a broader approach that addresses land and resource security. Greater attention is also needed to the intersections between agricultural markets and environmental change, and the diverse livelihoods of small-scale farmers (smallholders).
