ABSTRACT

Religion without any doubt plays important roles in Indonesia. Currently in Indonesia there are six recognized religions by the state which are Islam, Catholic Christian, Protestant Christian, Hindu, Budhism, and Congfuchu. In reality there are more than six religions in Indonesia, including indigenous religions which are yet to be recognized by the state. The teaching of religion in Indonesia is commenced since the children enter preschool education. In the national curriculum for early childhood education, it is stated that religious competencies is one the competencies that should be acquired by the young children. This chapter attempts to investigate further how religiosity is constructed in the kindergarten setting. This chapter will draw from my previous field notes, followed by focus group discussion with ten kindergarten teachers. In addition to these, I would analyse the national ECE curriculum in Indonesia. The finding is expected to provide the readers with direction on how to navigate the teaching of religion in highly multicultural society like Indonesia.
