ABSTRACT

Sir William Henry Cope of Hanwell, was the twelfth baronet. He was born in 1801 and served in the Rifle Brigade in the 1830s, developing a life-long passion for the regiment. He retired from the army in 1839, afterward becoming a clergyman in the Church of England. Cope wrote the definitive history of the Rifle Brigade, from which the selection below is drawn. He died in 1892.
