ABSTRACT

The 2d division of the 63d arrived this afternoon [at Portsmouth], and immediately embarked on board the Melville. The 4th embarked on Thursday in the Romney and Pyramus, and only sailed this morning, owing to contrary wind. The poor soldiers’ wives, with their children, arrived in hundreds, having marched 26 miles a day in a deplorable condition; and the scene of distress at witnessing their husbands’ departure was heart-rending. Two children died from fatigue on the road yesterday, belonging to the 63d.
