ABSTRACT

The following inquests have been taken by Mr. Todd during the present week.— At Stockbridge, on the body of Elizabeth Lanham, who died in consequence of a wound inflicted upon her about a month ago by Anne Sturt. The two women were natives of Ireland and wives of soldiers now on foreign service.—It appeared in evidence that they were drinking at the house of the deceased, on the evening of last Stockbridge fair day, in company with John Matthews, a pensioner, who was sober; a fight ensued between them in the man’s presence, at the conclusion of which Ann Sturt flung a quart cup at the deceased, which struck her a violent blow on the forehead, fracturing the skull, and causing an abscess in the brain, which terminated in death. Verdict—Manslaughter, against Ann Sturt and John Matthews, who were committed for trial.
