ABSTRACT

Sergeant Pearman was born in 1819 in Nettlebed, Oxfordshire to a small farming family. He enlisted in 1843 in the 3rd Light Dragoons, and went to India two years later where he served until 1853. Upon returning to England, he married the much younger Elizabeth Collins and joined the police force, retiring as a First Class Inspector. He had eleven children, eight of whom survived beyond infancy. In contrast to Faughnan, Pearman’s attitude to his marriage can fairly be described as sternly instrumental and business-like.
