ABSTRACT

On Tuesday. Charles Bury, a private in the 2nd battalion of Coldstream Guards, was charged before Mr. Yardley with sending a scurrilous and threatening letter to Lady Dyke, of Lullingstone Castle, Kent. Mr. Hayward, solicitor, of Dartford, appeared to prosecute. It appeared by evidence that the prisoner's wife had been wet nurse in Lady Dyke's service for four or five months past. On the 9th ult. prisoner called at Lullingstone Castle and conducted himself in a most violent manner, and was obliged to be removed by the butler. Since then the prisoner had written letters to his wife and others, and on the 29th ult. the one which formed the subject of this prosecution was received by Lady Dyke herself. Mr. Yardley, having perused it, said the letter was a long one, and had evidently been written under strong feelings. The principal threats were the following:—
