ABSTRACT

Corporal John Ryder of the 32nd Foot, was born in Twyford, Leicestershire and enlisted in 1844. He served four years in India, during which time he took part in the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1848–49. He retired from the army in 1850, after which he returned to Leicestershire and joined the police force. In the excerpt below he describes a truly fearsome storm that occurred on 22 July 1849.
