ABSTRACT

Sarah Anne Buckley, the wife of a gunner of the Royal Regiment of Artillery stationed at Gibraltar, was charged with stealing several articles from her lodgings, which she had left without notice. The case was clearly proved. The prisoner, who stood crying during the hearing, with an infant in her arms, admitted pledging the articles, being driven to do so from want, having received no remittance from her husband since he left Woolwich for Gibraltar and she could find no means of going out to him. Mr. Jeremy said that was no excuse. She should have applied to the relieving officer. She must pay a fine of 20s., or go to prison for fourteen days. Mr. and Mrs. Gleneston, the persons who had been robbed, paid the fine, and added some other relief, they having only given information of the robbery to save the woman from starvation.
