ABSTRACT

On Friday, private information was received at Bow-street, by R. Birnie, Esq. that a great number of females of the lowest class of Irish, were going about the country with forged passes, purporting that they were the wives of soldiers in his Majesty’s service, and thereby obtaining sums of money from overseers, churchwardens, and magistrates, to an amount almost incredible; indeed, there is every reason to believe that, within the last two months, a sum not less than five hundred pounds has been paid to different persons with forged passes, by parish officers, within thirty miles of London.
