ABSTRACT

Mr. J. J. Murphy applied to the bench on behalf of Harriet Hurst, for summons against Private Lilbury, Corporal Little, and Adjutant Robertson, all of the 3d Dragoon Guards, now stationed at Portobello. From the statement of Mr. Murphy it appeared that his client went to the barracks the previous evening in order to see a friend of hers named Mary Wardle, who resided as servant with the adjutant of the regiment. When she passed the barrack gate, the sentry on duty (Lilbury) called after her and asked what her name was? She replied Harriet Hurst, whereon he said he could not let her pass, as her name was amongst the prohibited prostitutes. She insisted on going in, when he dragged her back and pushed her outside the gate, saying he had orders to do so. She asked who gave him the order, and Corporal Little said he did, and that he did so by direction of his commanding officer. He then showed her a list of prohibited bad characters, and amongst them was her name. What he (Mr. Murphy) sought on behalf of his client was a summons against the sentry, Lilbury, for the assault, and summonses for the corporal and adjutant of the regiment as witnesses in the case.
