ABSTRACT

An unpleasant occurrence took place at sea on board the ship Earl Balcarras, just arrived in the Thames, resulting in Captain Kennedy placing Captain John Moore, 32d Regiment, under arrest. It is stated that a quarrel ensued between two of the soldiers' wives, and by order of Captain Kennedy one of the women was placed in confinement; she, however, "grinned" at the captain and then he ordered her below; the woman at the time was enciente, and as the place she was put in was infested with vermin, it led to a remonstrance between the two officers, and the senior placed the other in arrest, causing considerable consternation among the troops on board. During the voyage 84 soldiers, including six sergeants, died.
