George Buchanan was born in 1827 and took a medical degree at the University of St. Andrews in 1849. He was appointed a civil surgeon with the British army during the Crimean War, serving in hospitals “near the seat of war”. In 1874 Buchanan became the first professor of clinical surgery at the University of Glasgow. He died in 1906.
