ABSTRACT

The committee for carrying out this benevolent design has been formed; they propose to raise subscriptions to assist those not allowed to embark with their husbands, but kept on the marriage rolls of the depot, and those who have married soldiers without military license. On the present occasion only four women were allowed to embark for every 100 men, so that a great many have to be provided for by finding them employment, and, till that can be done, by temporary pecuniary assistance. The subscriptions are already liberally coming in. At a meeting of the members of the Army and Navy Club yesterday week, to endeavour to raise a subscription for the purpose of sending back to their homes, providing with employment, or otherwise befriending the wives and families of the soldiers now about to sail for Turkey, a sum of 112l. 17s. 6d. was subscribed within an hour by the members and visitors then in the club. The proprietor of Drury Lane gives a free benefit at that establishment, under distinguished patronage, in aid of the fund, and has placed the theatre at the free use of a committee of lady patronesses for three days in April for a Fancy Fair in aid of the fund. A great many of the licensed victuallers have opened boxes in their establishments for the receipt of public subscriptions.
