ABSTRACT

A Woolwich reporter writes:—“It has been resolved to employ female labour to some extent in the laboratory department of the Royal Arsenal, and a building termed there the Rectifying House has been fitted for that purpose. A number of women are now being instructed for such employment, which consists in fully preparing for service rifle balls, &c., after they are cast.” We are exceedingly glad to read this, and more especially gratifying would it be to learn that the females employed are the wives of soldiers. The importance of finding useful occupation for that class of women cannot be over-estimated. It is not merely of present advantage, as enabling them to relieve their husbands of the burden of maintain a family, but it provides a creditable source of existence when death bereaves the poor women of their natural supporters.— U.
