ABSTRACT

Francis Hogg was an army doctor serving in the Royal Artillery, whose first military appointment had begun in January 1859. He was subsequently stationed at Woolwich for ten years, ending in 1872, twice the normal length of posting, which apparently resulted from his popularity there. At Woolwich, he was actively concerned with the well-being of soldiers and their families, the Female Hospital and the homes of soldiers being particular foci of attention. In 1872, he was moved to Netley in Southampton, and the next year to India. On 21 September 1881, Hogg died at Morar Cantonment in Gwalior. The piece below was drawn from his experiences at Woolwich.
