ABSTRACT

In 2018, the China Institute for Building Design Standards and Research issued guidelines for the design of long-lasting housing. This capped several decades of experimental projects and a fundamental reassessment of traditional methods of designing multi-unit housing projects which are now viewed as producing premature and widespread obsolescence, social disruption and waste. Trends in demographics, economic investments and the urgency of building sustainably indicate that the Open Building approach (identified by other names in China) is an important development to be taken seriously.
