ABSTRACT

There is a long tradition in China for small to medium sized enterprises to provide the service of customized interior apartment decoration, in both new construction and in redecorating existing units. In the last five years, a few companies have gone to scale in providing this service. One such company can now out-fit an apartment in seven days with a trained team of four installers. This company has completed over 80,000 such units in the last few years. This chapter discusses how this tradition of small-scale interior decoration may be slowly leading to a sophisticated, factory-based ‘industrialized’ interior fit-out industry, while clearly showing the barriers to this more advanced way of working.
