ABSTRACT

Callum Richardson is a history teacher who began his Newly Qualified Teacher year at a school in London in September 2020. Before this he worked as a learning support mentor in the north east, subsequently completing his training there also. In this chapter, Callum shares a series of small exchanges he has had with students about his sexuality, exploring the fear that LGBT+ teachers share about losing the positive relationships they have with students as a result of coming out. His account also highlights, once again, how much our students can teach us about how to be kind, inquisitive and thoughtful human beings.
