ABSTRACT

Amy Ridler is a writer and trainee English teacher in London. She is also a tattooed feminist theatre collaborator and queer literature enthusiast. In this chapter, the message is that by being visible, young people can identify with you. In the same way, young people may look for somebody with the same ethnicity as them or look up to their favourite musician or music teacher. Amy also discusses the idea of having identity so authentic that it isn't even discussed, much like how we may admire a colleague's command of the classroom. For lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and others (LGBT+) students, we can be that teacher by being visible and unapologetic about our identity.
