ABSTRACT

Hadley Stewart is a successful writer who has written for several high-profile publications. His essay exploring his experiences of being gay in an all-boys' school, 'Masculinity and Homosexuality in School', is published in the Amazon best-selling book, Boys Don't Try? Rethinking Masculinity in Schools. This is the second of two chapters exploring what it is like to be an lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and others (LGBT+) student taught by an LGBT+ teacher. Meeting an LGBT+ teacher was a turning point in Hadley Stewart's life; being able to identify with them fuelled his love for writing and the English language. This chapter considers whether schools provide enough safe spaces for LGBT+ young people and enough allies for them to look up to.
