ABSTRACT

Pam Stallard is Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Longhill High School in a suburb of Brighton, where she has worked since 2014. A passionate educator who engages with education research and discussion on Twitter, Pam runs a weekly lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and others (LGBT+) group and is the first point of contact at her school for most students who need support with anything related to gender and sexuality. In this chapter, Pam is another example of a teacher who was told in her early years to 'keep personal details to a minimum' and has since become a visible LGBT+ role model because our duty as teachers is to our students. We can be there for them over a weekend or during a Summer holiday, in particular, because students may feel more isolated or not able to access the support they need.
