ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides the first dedicated inquiry into a distinctive rural gerontology, and also provides a foundation for understanding the concepts, approaches and themes that distinguish the field of study. It presents a new theoretically and conceptually informed framework that is representative of the twenty-first- century “rural turn” within gerontological studies. The book also provides insight into how the interplay between processes, structures and societal norms across different geographical scales influence experiences of ageing. It suggests critical rural gerontology also questions whether rurality is a useful descriptor within the ageing experience. The book highlights the capacity of rural ageing trends to impact on the economic, political and social fabric of rural life. It examines the impact of global challenges and events related to environmental sustainability and climate change.
