ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the professional career of the deaf translator and interpreter Juan Carlos Druetta, considering his practical and professional experience of training in interpretation and translation of sign languages, International Sign Language, and spoken languages. Druetta, is Argentinian, deaf, a former vice president of World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) from 2008 to 2011, known worldwide for his strong involvement in the deaf movement, an interpreter, and a university professor in translation and interpretation. Druetta himself works with translating and interpreting competence in International Sign Language and national sign languages at meetings of Latin American deaf people, as some countries do not have any professional deaf translators and interpreters or International Sign Language interpreters. The WASLI certification of an International Sign interpreter has four years of validity. Druetta was the only deaf person in Latin America who participated in the examination process, as registration was very expensive for people in South America.
