ABSTRACT
Multimodal-multilingual interpreters who work in three or more languages in signed–spoken interactions have a unique profile that sets them apart from bilingual (signed–spoken language) and multilingual (spoken language) interpreters. Moreover, the interactions and consumers with whom they work also merit special consideration. This chapter provides an overview of multimodal-multilingual interpreters and interactions, as well as some of the critical issues and topics regarding the work multimodal-multilingual interpreters do. Emerging debates surrounding the competencies and skills of multimodal-multilingual interpreters are also presented. The chapter concludes with a view towards expanding the research on multimodalities beyond the signed–spoken pair and the language combinations investigated to date.
