ABSTRACT

Julián Viso can be counted among the most outstanding lawyers, scholars of doctrine, and code designers in the legal history of modern Venezuela. He was also a civil servant, diplomat, and educator. From all these positions, as an integral professional, he contributed to the creation, establishment, and consolidation of the institutions of the independent Republic of Venezuela. Reviewing his life involved working with a variety of sources represented by public and private documents that he produced throughout his professional career. Born into a family with a recognized legal background, he showed his concerns and capacities for the study of law from the beginning of his university studies. Viso lived through the important process of transition and consolidation of the nation and institutions of independent Venezuela. He proposed codes and drafted constitutions with which to regulate a society that assumed the inherent commitments to republican citizenship. For this reason, his work requires study for anyone seeking to understand the evolution of the institutions of private and constitutional law in Venezuela.
