ABSTRACT

Physical activity and exercise are currently recommended in many healthcare systems across the globe for children with respiratory diseases with evidence to support benefits for many meaningful clinical outcomes. Tailoring physical activity and exercise programmes using best evidence, preferences, facilitators, and barriers of the child, and delivery method is both an art and science and provides the clinician with many challenges. The purpose of the present chapter is to provide guidance and information that may assist the reader to make informed decisions when tailoring physical activity and exercise prescriptions for their young patients. The chapter presents current evidence regarding physical activity and exercise in paediatric respiratory diseases namely asthma, cystic fibrosis (CF), and bronchiectasis. Counselling and the importance of identifying barriers and facilitators for physical activity participation are also discussed. The present chapter also focuses on modern digital technologies and the potential use of telehealth/medicine to deliver physical activity and exercise prescription and promote an active, healthy lifestyle in this young patient group.
