ABSTRACT

After briefly discussing the limitations in oppositionality, this essay proposes as an alternative post-oppositional politics; it then draws on Gloria Anzaldúa's work to explore post-oppositional identity formation and tactics. Post-oppositionality offers a deeply relational worldview and ethics that transforms binary-oppositional frameworks into a range of alternative possibilities. Post-oppositionality does not entirely reject oppositionality but instead embraces, without replicating, oppositional consciousness; and, by so doing, creates transformational alternatives that do not become trapped in binary us-against-them dynamics.
