ABSTRACT

Human futures are projected to be increasingly fraught with radical uncertainty. Living with such uncertainty has significant implications for mental health and wellbeing. In this chapter, the antifragile mindset is theorized as a growth mindset in which the psyche grows stronger in the presence of radical uncertainty. Four components are theorized to support the psychological embodiment of antifragility: heightened reliance on character strengths, time spent in and with the natural world, flexible personal narratives, and the use of anticipatory systems, or futures thinking. Antifragility is considered to rely upon a spiritual outlook that recognizes our interdependence with the natural world. By embracing interdependence as the sine qua non of human psychology, we increase humanity's ability to grow stronger in the face of the future stressors.
