ABSTRACT

Culture is one of the most contested concepts in research, service, and advocacy work. Community-based approaches require the consideration of culture. This chapter discusses culture and how culture fits into a community-based work. Definitions of culture, cultural terms, and perceptions of culture pertaining to community-based work are laid out. Next, the challenges of addressing culture in communities and knowledge creation are presented. The chapter continues by providing approaches to culture in the domains of medicine and community practice. Cultural humility is explained as a practice that helps researchers, practitioners, and students engage in valuable community-based work. An example of community-based work challenges and successes is given to contextualize the concepts that are examined. Finally, the chapter ends with recommendations on how to maintain cultural value in community-based work.
