ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to contribute to discussions among researchers who seek methodologies based on equitable community participation in the research process. The idea is to promote critical reflection on the challenges to and opportunities for community participation in key dimensions of research design, such as project goals, research question development, and analysis. To this end, we scrutinize our own methodology as we partnered with a community-based service organization in a study on neighborhood safety. Utilizing the thoughts of community members, we present our reflections on how community-based participatory theory can clarify pathways to community engagement in research.
