ABSTRACT

This chapter applies a community-based framework to analyze a project intended to support the development of a community organization’s programs and services in the Dominican Republic. The initiative was a household survey carried out through a partnership between the organization and a faculty-student research team from the University of Toledo. The purpose is to examine how the project’s dualist approach restricted local participation and explore how using a community-based lens brings into view transformative possibilities. This analysis contributes a critical perspective to the literature on community research by illustrating the importance of proper theoretical alignment for designing meaningful and relevant interventions.
