ABSTRACT
Like others in the U.S. legal system, vegans can either be on the offense or defense. As to offensive maneuvers, particularly lawsuits, much of that work summarized in this chapter has been performed by attorneys, most or all of whom are vegan, with nonprofit organizations such as the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Nonhuman Rights Project, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Mercy for Animals, and Compassion Over Killing. As to defending vegan activists when they are charged with crimes or incarcerated, this work has generally been performed by private criminal defense attorneys, defense committees, and individuals dedicated to supporting activists.
