ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the teachings of Islam as well as the ways contemporary Muslims interpret and practice those teachings through the lens of veganism. It gives an overview of the authoritative texts of the religion (Qur’an and Hadith) pertaining to the regulations and permissibility of human use and consumption of animals. It discusses the way these texts are interpreted by those who argue for and practice contemporary Islamic vegetarianism and veganism. The chapter then analyzes the assumption of humanity in the modern civilizing narrative of progress that underlies these contemporary arguments.
