ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I explore the field of ecocriticism through a queer vegan ecofeminist perspective. By means of a detailed critical reading of the major representatives of the field (all white men), I provide an overview of the main theoretical contributions of ecocriticism and point out the various ways in which these critics have radically divorced it from veganism. While ecocriticism’s fundamental goal of exploring the relationship between literature and the environment is quite noble, its categorical disregard of intersectionality, and its pointed refusal to acknowledge the major impact of ecofeminist thought in its most basic theoretical foundations severely weakens both its methodology and its credibility in a devastated (human produced) pandemic-infested planet where the obstinate refusal to address the environmental impact of who we eat and how we eat them becomes more unbelievable (and indefensible) with each passing day.
