ABSTRACT

The postmodern understanding of language, especially through philosophers, such as Foucault, Derrida, Paul De Man, have left a lasting impression on both literature and the study of literature. In a way, literature, especially fiction, exemplifies one of the core tendencies in postmodern thought and its emphasis on language; that, in Derrida’s words, ‘there is no outside the text’ (1976, p. 156). This raises questions about what fiction is for, particularly in relation to education.
