ABSTRACT
Where the moderns had followed the ancients in their valorisation of elevation, the postmodern transvaluation of all values led to a radical shift towards democratisation and a social form where equality of opportunity rules. Although old models of stratification persist, the flattening of thought and knowledge mean that it is no longer easy to defend critical visions of society because everything ends up being reduced to the status of opinion.
