ABSTRACT

Happy, happy are the people, the Daodejing states in chapter 20, who ‘see things so clearly … are so discriminating … all have their purposes.’1 They are the ones who have judged high and low, good and bad, and beautiful and ugly, and stay on the right side of the distinctions. A dismantling of the proofs and truths that make up this world would surely be disturbing for the happy, for inherent in the images they hold are their values, advantages, and realities. Such an occurrence, on the other hand, would be cause for celebration for the Daoist.
