ABSTRACT
This chapter reflects how crises demand sacrifices. A necessitated sacrifice is not a real sacrifice, but sustainability advocates have convinced people to want to make sacrifices—perhaps because ‘the West’ asserts it did replaced sacrifices with exchange, or design. Unsustainability flows from ‘the West's capacity to conceal all that it sacrifices to design modern existence.’ That concealing was done by the concept of ‘work,’ in both the instrumentalist and the ‘total-work-of-art’ sense. This suggests appropriate responses to crises, that may also loosen Western imperialisms, are practices that do not quite work, that unworked things—practices common during this global pandemic.
