ABSTRACT

One of the most distinctive features of the Lives of Athanasios the Athonite is a lengthy passage, which describes what rules the saint gave to his newly founded community at Lavra. In order to establish which hypothesis is correct we need to compare the two extant Lives of Athanasios with Gregory Pakourianos’ Typikon for his monastic foundation at Petritzos. The hagiographer of Michael Maleïnos mentions that the saint gave a rule to his monks but does not set out what these rules were. Whereas in the Life of Paul of Latros the typikon section has a different structure. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that we also find parallels in Theodore’s Monastic Penances. There is only one passage that has a counterpart in the Petritzos Typikon. The other stipulations have parallels in other rules.
