ABSTRACT

The world is becoming increasingly more intricate and divergent; technology even more powerful and disruptive. The complementary forces of globalisation and technological advancement are disrupting the status quo of our economies, workplaces, communities and all the way to the nuclear level of our families. The knowledge economy gave birth to the concept of smart cities, which became more prominent in recent decades, as urbanisation rates have reached record highs. Smart communities, small or large, rural or urban, leverage digital infrastructure and human capital to build inclusive prosperity, solve social problems and enrich citizens’ life quality as stated in the Intelligent Communities Forum vision. While the benefits of smart communities are inarguably evident, the disruption taking place across different sectors of the economy as a result of the change brought by smart communities is undeniable.
