ABSTRACT

The cultural bonds of association that grow from sporting activity can provide social cohesion and help strengthen communities. At a time of shifts in geopolitical order, a proliferation of technology, and population growth, the consideration of spaces for recreation may be timely. Sport can transcend gender, age and other divides if sporting infrastructure and activities are designed with that intention in mind. In 2012, Sport Singapore, a statutory board tasked with promoting sport, embarked on the Vision 2030 project to develop a long-term masterplan for delivering the value of sport for Singapore. This is a significant finding, especially in a culturally diverse society like Singapore, showing that the potential of sport as a universally engaging activity has grown regardless of gender, age and ethnicity. Sport has been found to make a positive social impact and benefit communities socially and economically.
