ABSTRACT

The challenge of facing major changes influenced by such drivers as globalisation, digitisation, demographic change, global migrations and environmental protection creates a need to rethink European positions constantly. Integrating trends might refer to such factors as culture, identity and the position vis-a-vis the rest of the world. Individual European countries refer to European values and concepts in their legal and political documents, especially in constitutions. The catalogue of values set out in art. 2 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) mentions respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights. The multitude of political beliefs, views and labels make the political map of the continent complex. Diversity was not perceived as an advantage in Europe in the beginning. Past experiences determined the direction of the search for the political and soon after the institutional solutions based on values.
