ABSTRACT

An action-based analysis of creative writing considers the ways in which patterns of action occur in the creative work and study. Every writer brings a theoretical understanding about the world they inhabit to their writing, infinite influences, curiosities that drive interest, and discovery, all the while, generating rich data memory sets from which to draw unique connections and patterns and creative insights that potentially surface in surprising reveals. Undoubtedly creative writers have experienced moments of sharpened clarity where an idea seems to magically pop in place, fully formed in a single conscious thought, ready to take off in the vehicle of their choosing. Writers are trained to be on the lookout for their next idea or bits of ideas or future ideas, and just anything that resonates with them, some ‘meat on the bone’, as Michael Frayn says, ‘something that lures you on’.
