ABSTRACT

Critical literacy in Colombia is a topic that keeps gaining traction, in particular in language research, both in English and Spanish. This chapter analyzes 29 articles written by Colombian scholars in national and international publications that discussed theories and principles of critical literacies and how they are surfacing in our local schools and teacher education programs. Our survey showed how Colombian scholars are using critical literacies as moments of social transformation and disruption of curricula and instructional practices. This chapter also illustrates some of the conceptual shifts in our scholarship, as research includes broader frameworks and understandings of critical literacy. For a country in the middle of major social, political, and economic shifts, critical literacy may provide a viable option to rethink our views of language and teaching while we continue to address questions of equity in representation, both in society and our growing scholarship.
