ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews research in the area of critical literacy in Puerto Rico. It foregrounds the impact and consequences of Puerto Rico’s past and present as a colonial territory of the United States and highlights critical literacy projects in and out of schools, as forms of anticolonial resistance, empowerment and reaffirmation. Particular attention is given to grassroots and community-based initiatives and their role in the creation of spaces that foster critical literacy and provide opportunities for Puerto Rican youth to perceive themselves as key agents of change working toward social and educational justice in the archipelago.
