ABSTRACT

Anti-Semitism is often a trade, and falsehoods are the goods it deals in. All efforts are either useless or superfluous. They are useless because Anti-Semitism, if genuine, is an irrational prejudice which obviously cannot be reached by argument, and if artificial, is a crafty, fraudulent pose not to be overcome by any appeal to truth or justice. The inevitable victory of right and truth must be prepared by the integrity of those who would taste the blessedness of it. The Jew is as brave as his average Christian neighbour—no more, and certainly no less; and when a particular Jew has shown himself especially brave there is no more necessity to emphasize his Jewish descent than there is, in a like case, to emphasize the Christianity of a Christian hero. The reputation of Israel is built up not by noisy testimonials to the surpassing excellence of the Jewish character, but by the silent influence exerted by that character upon general opinion.
