ABSTRACT

The man whose staff should miraculously bud should be by that fact declared the Divinely-chosen leader. Leadership is the coveted prize, not only for individuals, but for peoples. Leadership is of the very essence of our historic calling. For leadership there is needed the very consciousness of a call, pride in it, the resolve to forgo everything for its realisation; and for spiritual leadership there is needed a love of the spiritual, continuous traffic with it, a certain scorn of the world, the exaltation to the chief place of the things of religion. The men and women of the Church are to shake off the paralysis of faint hearts and believe in the grandeur of their calling, of their royal priesthood. Like Israel, the Church deems itself called to the spiritual empire of the world; but it doubts its strength and its capacity, as Israel may well doubt his.
