ABSTRACT

Given Joshua Farris’s chapter, it is no surprise that there is much on which he and I disagree. We do agree that physicalism is false. But, he rejects so-called “obscure dualisms” like hylemorphism, which is the view that I advance, and he advocates for SD, a view that I deny (see my chapter). So, aside from our agreement about physicalism, there’s much in Farris’s chapter with which I take issue. But here I wish to home in on what I take to be a central claim underwriting Farris’s emergent-creationism thesis: that persons/souls, such as you and me, are bare particulars. This claim is loading bearing for his argument, and it’s the claim I shall attempt to undermine. If I’m successful, his thesis collapses.
