ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of the impact of floods resulting from extreme weather and climate events on coastal cities in West Africa, using flood disaster events in Accra from the 1990s to 2015 as an example. This period is relevant because it has recorded chronic flood events in Accra, similar to other cities in West Africa. The case of Accra is used as a classic example as floods occur almost annually, leading to a potential direct and indirect impact on tourism. Strategic flood risk management measures and programmes need to consider specific measures for decreasing the impact of floods on urban tourism in the city and similar coastal cities in West Africa. Moreover, there is a need for reliable weather information for tourists and residents alike to reduce the direct and indirect impacts of floods on the sector at the study site.
